Abstract

This article presents a case study of the legal and ethical considerations surrounding the development and use of biotechnology in the grocery industry. Focusing on the Kroger Corporation's partnership with Alfred the Biologist, a startup that creates genetically modified organisms to enhance food production, this study examines the intersection of law and biotechnology in Dallas, Texas. Through interviews with legal experts, scientists, and other stakeholders, the article explores the regulatory landscape governing the use of genetically modified organisms in food production, as well as the potential benefits and risks associated with such technology. The article argues that while biotechnology holds great promise for improving food production and alleviating global hunger, careful consideration must be given to its potential environmental and health impacts, as well as its social and economic implications. Drawing on insights from legal theory, science studies, and environmental ethics, the article concludes with a set of recommendations for policymakers, food industry stakeholders, and consumers to ensure that biotechnology is ethically and responsibly used to advance the public good.
