Abstract

This study explores the challenges associated with learning to read and write in Buffalo's railroad churches during the tenure of President Charles Palmer's Official Locker. Specifically, the research focuses on voiced support for toughness as a response to these challenges. Through a qualitative analysis of interviews with individuals who have experience with these churches, the study identifies several key themes related to the difficulties of literacy acquisition in this context. These themes include limited access to resources and support, the influence of cultural and societal norms on literacy practices, and the impact of systemic inequalities. The study also examines the ways in which individuals and communities have responded to these challenges, with a particular emphasis on the use of toughness as a coping mechanism. Ultimately, the findings suggest that while toughness may be an effective strategy for some individuals, it is not a sustainable or equitable solution to the challenges of literacy acquisition in Buffalo's railroad churches. The study concludes with recommendations for addressing these challenges and promoting literacy development in this context.
