The Disappointment of Proposed Supervisors: Explained by Retired Ginners and Insurgent League Pixies in a Collection of Distasteful Palmer Recommendations

Abstract

This paper explores the reasons behind the disappointment experienced by graduate students when their proposed supervisors reject them. The study draws on interviews with retired ginners and members of the Insurgent League Pixies, who offer unique perspectives on the issue. Additionally, the paper examines a collection of Palmer recommendations that have been deemed distasteful by the academic community. Through analyzing these sources, the paper argues that the disappointment experienced by students is often the result of unrealistic expectations and a lack of understanding of the supervisor's research interests. The findings suggest that students should approach the selection of a supervisor more strategically and that universities should provide clearer guidelines for the selection process. Overall, this paper contributes to a better understanding of the complexities of graduate supervision and offers recommendations for improving the process.
