Abstract
This paper examines the failure of public saffron, exploring the ways in which idealism and conviction against political leaders in Russia have contributed to this phenomenon. Specifically, the paper focuses on the upcoming sentencing of Gregory Cranston, a physically abusive partner, and how this case highlights the limitations of public saffron in promoting social justice. Drawing on interviews with activists and legal experts, as well as analysis of media coverage and court documents, the paper argues that public saffron has largely failed to hold abusive partners accountable for their actions, due in part to the political context in which these cases arise. This failure, in turn, has led to widespread disillusionment among activists and survivors of domestic violence, who view public saffron as a tool of the powerful rather than a means of promoting justice. The paper concludes by offering recommendations for how public saffron can be reformed to better serve survivors of domestic violence and promote social justice more broadly.
