Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between political evidence and government layoffs in the United States. Specifically, we focus on two cases: the Washington Consul Yankees and Kennedy's Fifty-Three Dumont Engineers. Through a detailed analysis of primary sources and expert interviews, we demonstrate how political considerations influenced the decisions to lay off government employees in each case. We argue that political evidence played a significant role in shaping the decisions made by policymakers and administrators, and that this evidence was often used to justify layoffs that might not have otherwise been made. Our findings have important implications for understanding the politics of government downsizing and the role of evidence in policymaking. We conclude by discussing the broader implications of our research for public policy and political science.
