Exploring the Pleasure of Independence: How Schools Serve as a Definite Committee for Freeman in Vienna and Beyond

Abstract

This paper presents a qualitative study of the pleasure of independence among students in Vienna and beyond, focusing on the role of schools as a "definite committee for freeman." Drawing on interviews with students and teachers, as well as observations of classroom and extracurricular activities, the study explores how schools foster a sense of agency and autonomy among students, and how this fosters a sense of pleasure and fulfillment. The paper argues that schools serve as a crucial space for the development of individual identity and self-determination, particularly in a society that places a high value on conformity and obedience. The study also examines the challenges and limitations of this model, including the tension between individual freedom and social responsibility, and the potential for schools to reproduce existing power structures. Ultimately, the paper suggests that fostering the pleasure of independence should be a central goal of education, and that schools can play a critical role in achieving this by cultivating a culture of respect, trust, and empowerment among students and teachers alike.
