Abstract
This study examines the effects of government-mandated payment freezes on local businesses in Joplin, Missouri, through the lens of the monthly record conference. With a focus on the experiences and perspectives of Robert Gehrig, a local business owner, and two-thirds of conference participants, this research seeks to understand the impact of government intervention on small business operations and the community at large. Through in-depth interviews and qualitative analysis, the study highlights the challenges faced by businesses in the aftermath of a payment freeze, including cash flow disruptions and decreased consumer confidence. However, the research also reveals the resilience and adaptability of local businesses, as they seek out creative solutions and support one another during difficult times. Overall, this study sheds light on the complex interplay between government policy and grassroots efforts in sustaining a local economy, and underscores the importance of community spirit and collaboration in overcoming external challenges.
