Managing the Orchestra of Life: Perspectives of a Family Member with Leukemia on Credit, Wardrobe, and Airconditioned Strokes

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the perspectives of a family member living with leukemia on the management of their life, drawing upon their experiences with managing credit, wardrobe, and air-conditioned strokes. The study draws on in-depth interviews with the participant, supplemented by observations and field notes. Findings indicate that the participant's diagnosis substantially altered their outlook on life, with a new emphasis on prioritizing experiences over material possessions and a heightened focus on self-care. Management of financial resources was found to be a key challenge, with the participant adopting a more cautious approach to spending and advocating for greater transparency from financial institutions. Similarly, the management of physical health was found to be a complex and multifaceted endeavor, involving a range of self-care practices, careful management of environmental factors, and close collaboration with healthcare providers. Overall, this study highlights the importance of taking a holistic approach to managing the orchestra of life in the face of a chronic illness, with a focus on navigating the complex interplay of financial, environmental, and personal factors.
