Convenience vs. Inclusivity: Navigating the Tipped Scales of Advanced Education Department Living

Abstract

In this study, we explore the challenges that arise when advanced education departments balance the convenience of their operations with inclusive practices. Using a mixed-methods approach, we conducted surveys and interviews with faculty, staff, and students at a large public university in the United States. Our findings reveal that convenience and inclusivity are often seen as competing priorities, with some participants expressing frustration that convenience is valued over inclusivity. We also found that certain groups, particularly students from marginalized backgrounds, were more likely to face barriers to inclusion in departmental activities. However, we also identified several strategies that departments can use to promote inclusivity without sacrificing convenience. These include creating transparent policies, providing training for faculty and staff, and actively seeking out and valuing diverse perspectives. Overall, our study highlights the importance of balancing convenience and inclusivity in advanced education departments and provides practical recommendations for achieving this balance.
