Survivors of Street Robberies and Cartel Wars: Finding Meaning in Different Circumstances through Surprising Disarmament and Missile Rescues

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates the experiences of survivors of street robberies and cartel wars in Mexico, exploring how individuals find meaning in different circumstances through surprising disarmament and missile rescues. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 25 survivors, the study highlights the central role of various coping mechanisms, including religion, social support, and personal resilience, in enabling individuals to make sense of and find meaning in their traumatic experiences. The findings suggest that despite the different circumstances surrounding street robberies and cartel wars, survivors share similar experiences of shock, fear, and vulnerability, and they rely on similar coping strategies to overcome these challenges. The study contributes to the growing literature on trauma and resilience, highlighting the importance of adapting coping strategies to different traumatic events and contexts, and providing insights into the processes of meaning-making and coping among survivors of violent events. The study also has significant implications for policy and practice, informing efforts to support survivors of street robberies and cartel wars and highlighting the need for more comprehensive and integrated approaches to addressing trauma and violence in Mexico.
