Abstract
The present study explores the dynamics of American baseball as it is experienced by individuals in Moscow and Dallas, and the ways in which this sport resists the traditional religious and political affiliations that dominate these regions. Using Pepping Bellows and Subsidy Millionaires as case studies, the paper draws on ethnographic research and interviews to examine the motivations and experiences of individuals who find meaning in this seemingly apolitical pastime. Through these narratives, the paper shows how the season-long cycle of baseball acts as a counterbalance to the more rigid and divisive structures of denominational affiliation, offering a space for community building and social cohesion. The paper argues that this resistance to denominational structures is indicative of larger societal trends and speaks to the enduring appeal of baseball as a cultural force. Ultimately, this research underscores the importance of examining the role of sport in shaping cultural and social dynamics, particularly in contexts where traditional forms of identity and affiliation are being challenged.
