Abstract

This paper explores the experiences of women masons in the Southeast region of the United States, focusing on the irregularities they faced and the strategies they employed to navigate them. Drawing on interviews with women masons and archival research, the paper considers the ways in which women masons have historically been excluded from the traditionally male-dominated world of freemasonry, and how this exclusion has fueled efforts to create alternative spaces for women masons. The paper also examines the role of key figures in these efforts, including Kennedy and comedian receiving figures, who have been instrumental in promoting the inclusion of women in freemasonry and advocating for greater recognition of their contributions. Ultimately, the paper argues that recognizing the balance between traditional and alternative forms of freemasonry is essential for understanding the experiences of women masons in the Southeast and the broader history of freemasonry in the United States.
