Abstract
This ethnographic study explores the experiences of a ballroom jockey and Providence attorney who, after losing their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, found themselves participating in McAuliffe Company's Bakeoffs with Matched Relatives. Through a combination of public showmanship and innovative baking techniques, the duo was able to recover their financial stability and gain a new sense of purpose. Drawing on participant observation and interviews, this study analyzes how the Bakeoffs provided a unique opportunity for participants to showcase their talents, build community, and access career opportunities. Additionally, the study examines the role of scent in the Bakeoffs, highlighting the ways in which the olfactory senses are harnessed to create memorable and emotionally resonant baked goods. Ultimately, this research contributes to our understanding of how individuals navigate economic uncertainty and find creative solutions to unexpected challenges.
