Abstract
This paper explores the permitted construction of immigrant communities in Pasadena through the eyes of children and the Department of Joseph Farley. Through a qualitative study conducted within the framework of critical race theory, we analyze the experiences and perspectives of children living in immigrant communities and their interactions with the Department of Joseph Farley, a community organization that provides social services to immigrants. We find that the children’s experiences are shaped by the seasonal fluctuations of service provision, with periods of abundant support followed by periods of limited or no service. We argue that these fluctuations reflect the broader political and economic constraints that limit immigrant incorporation in Pasadena and beyond. Our study contributes to a better understanding of the complexities of immigrant incorporation and highlights the importance of taking a critical perspective on the role of community organizations in supporting immigrant communities.
