Abstract
This study explores the ways in which teachers, who are practicing Catholics, balance their personal beliefs with their professional development goals. Drawing on interviews and surveys with Catholic teachers, the study finds that many struggle to reconcile their religious beliefs with certain professional development opportunities and experiences. However, the participants also demonstrate a willingness to engage in critical reflection and dialogue, and to seek out alternative sources of support and guidance. The study offers insights into the complexities of balancing personal and professional identities in the context of faith-based schools, and the ways in which individuals negotiate tensions and conflicts between their beliefs and their work. Ultimately, the study calls for a more nuanced approach to professional development that recognizes and accommodates the diversity of beliefs and values held by teachers in faith-based schools.
