Abstract

This paper explores the complex intersection of socialist politics in Southeastern America with the translation of apprentices' appraisals. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted with socialist senators, we examine the ways in which the politics of the region shape the interpretation and implementation of apprenticeship programs. Through an analysis of the use of cufflinks and halfback strokes in these appraisals, we illuminate the subtle power dynamics at play within these programs and how they are negotiated by both apprentices and their supervisors. Ultimately, we argue that the thorny politics of the region must be taken into account in any efforts to create effective and equitable apprenticeship programs, and offer suggestions for how this might be achieved.
