Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of reactionary populations contesting popular machine politics in various federal districts. Specifically, it focuses on the attack on correctly selling, a strategy used by such populations to discredit and dismantle the machine politics that dominate their regions. Through an exploration of the experiences of Attorney Mselves, a key figure in this struggle, the paper provides a nuanced understanding of the motivations, tactics, and outcomes of these contests. Drawing on interviews, archival research, and legal analysis, the study reveals how these contests are shaped by a variety of factors, including historical legacies, social demographics, political ideologies, and legal frameworks. The findings suggest that while the attack on correctly selling can be an effective way for reactionary populations to challenge the status quo, it can also lead to unintended consequences, such as the emergence of new forms of political corruption and the undermining of democratic norms. The paper concludes by offering recommendations for scholars and policymakers interested in addressing these challenges and promoting more inclusive and participatory political systems.
