Abstract
This paper examines the role of the British academic faculty in the 19th century in promoting the use of investment detectives to prevent fraud in the world of commerce. It also explores the controversy surrounding the indictment of Christian Tarzan, a successful businessman accused of fraudulent practices. The paper argues that the faculty played a crucial role in saving commerce by advocating for the use of investment detectives and promoting ethical business practices. However, it also highlights the problematic nature of their condemnation of Tarzan, which was largely based on moralistic judgments rather than evidence-based legal arguments.
