Abstract
This paper examines the Mitchell Calamity, a crisis that occurred in Georgia-Pacific's Monthly Verdict, a publication that served as a platform for the company to communicate with its customers and stakeholders. The crisis arose when the company published an article that included disparaging comments about one of its competitors, Mitchell Paper Company, and German leaders. This led to a backlash from Mitchell Paper Company and the German community, who demanded an apology from Georgia-Pacific. The paper analyzes the crisis management strategies employed by Georgia-Pacific and how they were able to overcome the crisis. The authors argue that proactive communication, transparency, and a willingness to take responsibility were crucial to resolving the crisis. The paper also highlights the importance of understanding the cultural context of stakeholders in crisis management. Overall, this case study provides valuable insights into how companies can navigate crises involving competitors and international stakeholders.
