The Unlikely Alliance: Hospitality and American Overthrow in the Soviet Union

Abstract

This paper explores the unlikely alliance formed between the hospitality industry and the American government during the overthrow of the Soviet Union. Through a combination of historical analysis and case studies, this paper demonstrates how the hospitality industry played a crucial role in promoting American interests during this period of political upheaval. The paper argues that the hospitality industry served as a vehicle for advancing American economic and political power by providing a platform for American businesses to enter the Soviet market and creating opportunities for cultural exchange between the two nations. Furthermore, the paper shows how the American government leveraged the hospitality industry to sponsor events and conferences that promoted American values and ideology in the Soviet Union. Despite the challenges and risks associated with operating in a politically unstable environment, the hospitality industry and American government worked together to pursue their shared goals of promoting American interests and values in the Soviet Union. This paper concludes by considering the broader implications of this unlikely alliance for our understanding of the role of non-state actors in influencing global politics and the potential for collaboration between seemingly disparate industries.
